Mistakes To Avoid When Ordering Fireplace Doors!

Here is list of the most common problems we hear from "People who Did Not Purchase Glass Doors From Us!". Please be aware that we do not offer technical service or parts for fireplace glass doors that were not purchased from us. Particularly doors that are sold at places like Home Depot, Lowe's or OSH. Such doors are much lower quality than those we offer, so problems are particularly common. This page is here to share some insight inspired by very common questions people have and mistakes they have made because they purchased their doors without ever having talked to a fireplace expert.

This information also helps illustrate just how important it is to talk to on of our Fireplace Door Experts before you purchase doors for your fireplace anywhere.

1 Problem with fireplace doors from Lowes!
I just installed some Pleasant Hearth fireplace doors that I bought at Lowe's last week. I had the hardest time getting them installed and never could get the doors to line up correctly. Even worse, one of the glass panels has now shattered after the first time I burned a fire. I went back to Lowes and they don't carry replacement glass for fireplace doors...nor could they help me get one. I also tried Home Depot and a couple other places, but I am stumped, frustrated, and very disappointed. Why would the glass break so easily...and how can I get it replaced?

The Fireplace Door Expert: Broken glass is a common problem with fireplace doors that are sold at home centers because many of them use inferior parts to hold the glass, or as in your case, the glass is only 3/16" thick instead of the more durable 1/4" thick glass used on higher quality doors like those we recommend. Unfortunately, home centers do not generally carry replacement parts for their fireplace doors, so you are going to need to have one custom made from a local glass shop. Get out your yellow pages and start calling. You will need to find someone who can special order a piece of 3/16" fully tempered safety glass to match your other panels. It must by fully tempered, otherwise it will not be safe. Once you find a place who can have it made, don't just give them the size of the glass panel. Take one of the doors with you and have them measure it so they can make sure they are duplicating the size, glass color as well as the way the edges were treated so that it matches as good as possible.

Tip for other visitors:

All of the fireplace glass doors that we sell have 1/4" thick fully tempered safety glass with specially treated edges. The glass is held into the door frame with methods that best allow for thermal shock, expansion and contraction, and avoid direct contact with the metal parts of the frame. These types of features make the doors more expensive, but they are minimum requirements for the doors that can hold up to the rapid heating and cooling of your fireplace and constant opening and closing over seasons. Don't be lured into buying fireplace doors that are $350 or less like those sold at home centers. If you have just started shopping for fireplace doors, you will first need to overcome the sticker shock. The "Starting Price" for the "Cheapest Fireplace Doors" we would recommend is about $450.00 to $500.00. The average price for doors that our customers purchase is closer to $850.00...and the more attractive custom made doors go for anywhere between $900 to over $2500. That's simply what they cost...even with the best discounts you can get. That also puts the $350 or less doors more into perspective.

By the way, some of our doors actually even have a lifetime warranty on the glass, which goes to show what a difference that extra 1/16" in thickness will make when combined with solid quality manufacturing. Don't settle for less just to save a few bucks, otherwise you may end up with the same predicament described above.

2 Problem: How do I install fireplace doors from Lowes!
I cannot figure out how to install my fireplace door that I just bought at Lowes. Are there special brackets that I can buy that make it easier to attach my doors to the metal portion of my fireplace. I tried asking someone at Lowe's, but they could not help me. I'm getting pretty frustrated...please help?

The Fireplace Door Expert: This is a common problem with people who purchase fireplace doors from places like Lowe's or Home Depot. In many cases, installation problems come from trying to install a door made for masonry fireplaces onto a metal prefabricated fireplace. Prefabricated fireplaces require special doors that usually must be custom made. They are designed differently than masonry fireplace doors because the door frame cannot cover up the air inlets inside the opening of the metal fireplace, otherwise the fireplace can overheat and cause a potential fire hazard. Doors for zero clearance fireplaces must be designed to allow air to flow into the fireplace to keep it cool. They also come with special hardware that makes it possible to attach them to a metal fireplace. Even more, installing doors made for masonry fireplaces onto a prefab fireplace will create a potential fire hazard. A large percentage of homes in the USA now have prefabricated fireplaces, yet the specially made doors for these are not sold at home centers like Lowe's or Home Depot. They must be purchased from fireplace specialty dealers like us.

3 Problem: My fireplace doors don't fit!
I thought I measured my fireplace correctly...but now my doors don't fit and the place I purchased them from won't take them back because I destroyed the packaging. I spent over $600.00...what can I do?

The Fireplace Door Expert: Email us a picture of your fireplace before you purchase your fireplace doors. One of our fireplace experts will look at your picture and then tell you exactly how to measure your particular fireplace to make sure your doors fit perfectly!

4 Problem: My new fireplace doors have gaps around the fireplace opening!
My measurements were correct according to the size chart but there are gaps between the bricks that are not covered by the door frame, so it looks horrible.!

The Fireplace Door Expert: This is actually a very common problem with brick fireplaces because the fireplace door size charts do not mention anything about covering mortar joints.

5 Problem: The Finish on my fireplace doors is turning colors!
I burned a fire with my fireplace doors closed because I heard I would get more heat efficiency out of my fireplace. Only problem is...the brass plated finish on my fireplace doors is burnt. Is there any way I can fix it?

The Fireplace Door Expert: If this person had discussed their needs with one of our fireplace door experts, we would have recommended a door that did not have a brass plated finish and would also have suggested that it is not the best idea to burn the fire with the doors closed. The way that fireplace doors help improve efficiency is by closing them as the fire is dying out so as to prevent cold air from coming into the home when the damper needs to be left open.

6 Problem: How do I adjust my fireplace glass doors fit?
According to the size chart, the door I purchased should fit an opening that is anywhere form 24" to 30" high. My opening is 26 1/2" high...how do I adjust the frame to fit under the layer of bricks that projects out across the top of my fireplace?

The Fireplace Door Expert: For starters, there is no way to adjust the height of the frame. The range of heights that the door will fit assumes that your fireplace facing is flat. Whenever there is a ledge projecting out across the top of the fireplace, it is most likely that a door needs to be custom made to fit under the ledge.

7 Problem: How do I install my fireplace doors!
I cannot seem to get my fireplace doors to go flat against my fireplace. It seems that the door frame is bumping into the row of bricks that goes across the bottom of my fireplace. What can I do?

The Fireplace Door Expert: This is an example of a situation where the hearth inside the fireplace is higher than the hearth outside the fireplace. Since most fireplace doors have some type of rigid sub-frame that projects back inside the fireplace, if there is anything obstructing the sub-frame, the doors cannot be properly installed. Most people do not know to look for things like this when they measure their fireplace...which is why it is a great idea to talk to our fireplace door experts.

8 Problem: Why are there gaps around my fireplace opening?
I spend nearly $1800.00 and waited 10 weeks for a beautiful custom made fireplace door. The door looks very nice except that after I installed it, there is big gap that runs all the way across the bottom of the door along the hearth. What can I do to cover up this ugly hole?

The Fireplace Door Expert: This is an example of a fireplace where the hearth does not go all the way up to the fireplace opening. With most of the less expensive fireplace doors, the outer frame is rather thick and bulky sheet metal frame that projects out 1 or 2 inches from the face of the fireplace. These types of doors don't look that great, but they will often cover this gap and nobody will ever have thought twice about it. However, most of the better looking custom made fireplace doors have a 1/4" thick solid bar-stock frame.

In cases like this, a special angle iron (toe bar) can be added to the bottom of the door frame to cover this gap in cases where it exists...or the gap can be filled in with mortar.

9 Problem: I don't like the way my doors cover my new marble!
I had some beautiful marble work done to my fireplace and the doors that I just installed overlap the opening so much that it covers half of the detailed marble border I paid dearly to have created. What can I do about this?

The Fireplace Door Expert: You cannot do anything to the existing doors that you purchased other than live with the mistake. However, we specialize in custom made doors that fit directly inside the marble opening, or only overlap about 1/4" to 1/2". If you are willing to replace your doors, then give us a call.

10 Problem: I cannot figure out how to attach my fireplace doors to my rock fireplace!
I purchased some glass doors online, but I cannot figure out how to attach the doors to the rock front on my fireplace.

The Fireplace Door Expert: Rock fireplaces require special treatment when it comes to fireplace glass doors. In most cases, the doors need to be custom made to fit inside the opening between the rocks, then the gaps are filled in with mortar. There are very few fireplace door professionals who know how to handle this situation...and we are one of them.

After you have emailed us pictures of your fireplace we will be able to determine the best way to have your doors made, instruct you on how to measure correctly, and make sure you understand what is involved in the installation so that you can decided to do it yourself or hire a mason. 11 Problem: My custom arched fireplace doors don't fit!
I have an arched fireplace and had some custom doors made. However, there is a gap in the top right corner where the door frame does not quite overlap my arch. I supplied a template to the company...but for some reason it does not fit.

The Fireplace Door Expert: Making a template for an arched fireplace can be tricky. Not only does it need to be accurate, it needs to have the proper indications on it so that the people making the door can interpret what the template means. There are several things that can go wrong or get lost in the translation. So we will always instruct you on the proper way to make a template for "Your Specific Fireplace" once we see what it looks like from your pictures.

Once we receive the template, we have several checks and balances that we go through in order to make sure the template is sound and can be interpreted correctly by the manufacturer. In many cases, when a fireplace has a somewhat uneven or irregular shaped arch, we simply suggest that we custom make the door using a 1" wider material that will allow more room for error so that you do not need to sweat so much over how accurate you can make your own template.
